Before becoming a psychologist, I worked in education in Australia and overseas. I have ten-years’ experience as the principal and and senior psychologist at Warren Claughton & Associates. Education called me back and for a few years I worked part-time as a school psychologist while seeing clients at my private practice. This has given me a broader understanding of the personal, interpersonal and cultural issues in the broader community.
I speak Spanish. Some clients feel more at ease when they can express their emotions and experiences in the context of their culture and language.
I use an eclectic approach to counselling according to the client’s needs. The goal of the therapy is for the clients to gain an awareness and insight into their underlying issues and how they became unhelpful adaptive behaviours that they hold on to survive. For example, the over responsible person, the rescuer, the inner critic, the fearful anxious, the worrier, the people pleaser. For the client, the therapy is a process that involves an inner exploration and discovery of who they really are while applying practical strategies. It is expected that in this experiential learning process the client will gain acceptance, trust, emotional connectedness and freedom.
